Poetry Archive

I wrote my first poem when I was 7 years old on the 4th of July about Independence Day. After that, I crafted religious poetry based on the hymns I grew up singing in my childhood Baptist hymnal. I grew up reading the works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Emily Dickinson. Then, when I was 15, I discovered Tolkien who led me into the world of ancient and medieval verse. My first year at university, I was a French and English major, and in particular devoted myself to studying the style and content of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, and Keats--with some Milton and Shakespeare on the side. At the age of 18 and 19, I discovered the poets David Whyte and Mary Oliver who both impacted me greatly.

None of my old poetry is particularly "good"--but I love each piece because I find a spark of something there. Because I'm narcissistic and high attachment, I decided it was time to transfer all my old poetry onto some basic page or place (from where it's scattered across the internet on various poetry forums, emails, etc.) so that at the very least I can see my own evolution as both a person and a poet reflected below. So that's what I've done.

Poetry by year and age provided and alphabetized. Poetry in Green are ones I consider to be some of my better poetry. Poetry in Green with asteriks are some of my best or most meaningful pieces.
